We are currently in the early days of what has been called the 5G revolution. This technology is expected to inspire sweeping new developments, from allowing surgeons to perform robotic surgeries remotely to changing the way cities operate and provide services. It appears that these changes are all but inevitable at this point, which can be concerning if you are unsure of how to protect yourself from 5G.

Essentially, 5G consists of three different types of towers: low band, medium band, and high-band (or millimeter-wave). Low band and medium band signals behave very similarly to 4G and other existing technologies. They certainly may cause health problems, but they aren’t anything too new.

Millimeter-wave 5G, on the other hand, operates at a much higher frequency. As little as we understand the effects of 4G exposure, we understand even less about the impact of exposure to frequencies in the high band 5G range.

We’ve already covered this topic pretty extensively in 5G Radiation Dangers: The Complete Guide and 5G Technology Explained. These guides provide a helpful starting point for learning about 5G radiation and possible health impacts.

After learning more about 5G, you may have some questions. Because 5G is so prevalent, and the health impacts of exposure so poorly understood, you may even feel a bit anxious. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your family, generally just by minimizing your exposure.

Here are a few things to consider doing to protect yourself from 5G exposure.

Locate towers in your area

One of the problems with 5G technology is that it’s still in its infancy. Telecommunications companies are still in the process of rapidly expanding their 5G networks, and, as a result, more towers are being built all the time.

What that translates to is that even though you may not have a tower by your home today, that doesn’t mean one won’t be constructed next door tomorrow. Locating the towers in your area is a constant and ongoing process — not something you can simply do once and never think of again.

The best way to locate nearby towers is through the use of a 5G map such as Ookla. In our guide 5G Cell Towers Near Me, we dive further into how to use Ookla to find 5G towers in your area.

Choose rural over city living

When the major 5G networks are fully developed, we may not have as many dead spots as we currently do with 4G. Low band networks have a wide enough range that many rural areas will be covered.

In spite of this, your overall exposure in a rural area is still going to be significantly less than if you lived across the street from a millimeter-wave tower — something that is, in fact, a reality for many city dwellers. If your goal is to live in an area with the lowest amount of 5G radiation possible, you’re much better off in the woods or the country versus a densely populated city.

This tip isn’t practical for everyone. If you’re already well-established in an area, moving is likely not an option. But if you are at a time in your life where you’re considering where that next home or apartment is going to be, a rural area may be better from a 5G-standpoint.

Turn off your cell phone at night to protect against 5G radiation

As 5G technology expands further, fewer and fewer phones will utilize 4G or other, earlier-generation signals. These signals will eventually be phased out, and all phones will connect to the 5G network or WiFi.

It may be best to forgo a cell phone altogether. Unfortunately, that is not a realistic option in today’s world for most of us. As an alternative, however, you could simply try turning your cell phone off at night.

There are a few compelling reasons to try this. For one, cell phones produce blue light which disrupts the natural production of melatonin, which is a chemical released in our brains to make us fall asleep. This can cause insomnia and other sleeping issues, which is why using your cell phone before bed is generally not recommended.

Additionally, and perhaps most relevant here, is the fact that a cell phone gives off RF-EMF radiation as it communicates to a nearby cell tower. This isn’t just true for a 5G phone — any cell phone does it, but the advice is still applicable when it comes to 5G. Turning off your phone at night decreases your overall EMF exposure levels.

Sleep is the body’s most restorative time, so taking this step at night (or whatever time it is that you normally sleep) is important. If you work an on-call job or need to keep your phone on for other reasons, you could also reduce your exposure by putting the device all the way across the room from you as you sleep.

Use a protective bed canopy

Bed canopies are another great option if you need to have your phone on and nearby at night. These can also shield you from radiation from any nearby towers. Protective canopies are usually made of some kind of mesh shielding material. They are attached to your ceiling at various points and drape down over your bed.

In order to be effective, the canopy must completely cover your bed. After getting into bed at night, make sure the canopy is fully closed, as well. These canopies can be an investment, but they are one of the best ways to ensure your body is able to fully heal itself as you sleep.

There are several canopy options out there. One is BlocSilver’s EMF Shielding Bed Canopy, which is available in sizes big enough for a king bed and effective against frequencies up to 40Hz, which is well within 5G range. Other options are available in our EMF Bed Canopies guide.

Try two coats of EMF paint

If you’ve pinpointed a tower near your home, EMF paint on any interior walls near the tower may help you protect yourself from 5G radiation. EMF paint can be made from a variety of materials — some contain metal flakes, while others do not. They are generally pretty effective after even a single coat, but many manufacturers recommend doing two for added protection.

One popular type of EMF paint on the market is from the manufacturer YShield. This brand of EMF paint is made from a blend of water, graphite, and carbon. It goes on jet black, but can easily be covered up by another color of silicone-based paint if desired. One thing to note about YShield’s paint is that it is conductive, and therefore must be grounded by a licensed electrician. This is not a unique feature for EMF paint, however — many different brands require grounding.

Supplements to protect yourself from 5G

You may already take a variety of vitamins and supplements as a part of your daily routine. It turns out, some of these may also help your body repair itself from damage done by 5G and other sources of EMF radiation. When completely ridding yourself of any exposure isn’t a realistic option, the next best bet is to give your body the tools it needs to heal.

There are many different supplements that may have relevant benefits. Ginseng, for example, is known to have radioprotective abilities, although it hasn’t been studied with regards to 5G specifically. Melatonin, meanwhile, can help combat the detrimental effects of blue light exposure, while Vitamin C was shown to protect rats from EMF-related changes to liver enzymes.

Scatter crystals throughout your home

Crystals have a longstanding reputation as instruments of healing and peace. If you’ve ever been to a rock shop or new age store, you’ve probably seen note cards next to different crystals denoting all of their various benefits. People rely on crystals for a number of different reasons, and, it turns out, detoxification is one of them. That means these crystals could potentially help protect from 5G radiation.

Many crystals have detoxifying, healing, and protective properties that could be helpful when it comes to EMF radiation. Moonstone, for example, may help reduce the symptoms of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity, and amethyst is said to increase the body’s ability to heal itself. For more information, see the Top 10 EMF Protection Crystals.

Shungite is another stone that is commonly referenced when it comes to EMF radiation. It can be quite effective at protecting against EMF radiation, especially in elite form. When buying shungite, look for stones that are shiny and almost obsidian-like. For more on shungite, see Shungite for EMF Protection.

Clothing to protect against 5G radiation

If you often have to leave the home and find yourself in areas near a 5G tower, protective clothing may help. Many different types are available, ranging from hoodies to pants, hats, and underwear. It may not be a full-body suit, but at least some of your more sensitive organs can remain covered.

OURSURE’s Anti-Radiation Cami Tank Top is an example of an EMF protective clothing product. Made from a 100% silver-nylon blend, this tank top can be worn as a base layer or on its own.

Final thoughts

There seems to be little doubt that this new technology is here to stay. Your best bet is to take steps to protect yourself from 5G radiation, and the tips in our guide are a great place to start.
