You may have seen or heard of shungite before. This deep black stone can be either shiny or matte, and it’s becoming increasingly popular. Part of the increase in awareness surrounding shungite is this stone’s reported ability to protect against EMF radiation.
So what exactly is shungite? Should you be stocking up?
Before you make up your mind one way or another about this stone, let’s take a closer look at it.
What is shungite?
To answer that question, it may be helpful to first have a brief chemistry lesson. The element carbon has many potential formations. Diamonds, for example, are one form of carbon. So is graphite. Fullerenes are another form of carbon. There you have it, that’s all you need to know.
Shungite is a carbon-based mineral. It is unique because it’s the only naturally occurring substance on Earth to contain fullerenes, with the other source being meteorites. These fullerenes are the source of some of shungite’s benefits, which we’ll go over a little later.
What benefits of shungite have been studied?
Shungite has been used in Russia for years to purify water. Shungite water has many reported benefits, but from a scientific standpoint, the primary benefit of placing shungite stones in water is purification. Studies have confirmed the stone’s anti-microbial properties, and it’s frequently used in wastewater treatment facilities as a part of the filters the water is sent through.
Another confirmed benefit of shungite is its ability to protect against UVB damage to skin cells in hairless mice. Researchers exposed the hairless mice to concentrated amounts of UVB radiation over a period of two days. Next, topical elite shungite was applied to the mice’s backs. The areas of skin that received the shungite ointment improved markedly quicker than the untreated skin. The study concluded that shungite had anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties that helped protect the mice from UVB radiation.
Knowing what kind of impact shungite can have against UVB radiation, it makes one wonder about EMF, as well. One study that looked at shungite’s water purification potential pointed out that because of the mineral’s conductive properties, it could have the ability to protect against electromagnetic frequencies ranging from 10-30GHz, as well as 50Hz electric fields (with 50Hz being the frequency given off by power lines in many parts of the world).
What are the unconfirmed benefits?
Although not all the benefits of shungite have been studied, this stone does have many reported uses, as well. Shungite water, (that is, water that has been purified using raw elite shungite stones,) when used to wash your face and body, is said to help combat acne and improve skin tone and elasticity. Drinking shungite water reportedly can help with digestive issues, improve skin and hair health, and help alleviate headaches and breathing problems.
Shungite stones are used by some to bring mental clarity and focus to their meditation. For those who are spiritually minded, shungite is said to help restore balance across all chakras, as well as promoting a positive mindset. Other reported benefits of this stone include its ability to clear negative energy, promote healing, and increase alertness.
Where is shungite found?
Shungite is unlike a lot of other crystals, in that it can’t be found just anywhere. So where can you find this gemstone?
In nature
You probably aren’t going to find shungite while on a rock hunting mission. While there is an abundance of shungite out there, it’s mostly confined to a single deposit near the Shunga Village in Karelia, Russia. There are also a few smaller deposits scattered across Russia, as well as in several other countries throughout Europe and Asia.
Retail
Your best bet for finding shungite is to purchase it, either in stores or online. If you have a rock shop near you, they may carry shungite or be able to order some for you. Many metaphysical and new age stores carry polished and tumbled shungite stones, as well as bracelets and necklaces.
For raw stones, online is usually the easiest option. Amazon has a large selection of raw shungite stones available for purchase.
Tips for purchasing shungite
There are two types of shungite. The first is 98% carbon and contains those fullerenes we mentioned earlier. This type is pretty rare — it accounts for about 1% of all shungite out there. Elite shungite, as it’s called, is a very lustrous stone — similar in appearance to raw obsidian.
The second type is far more common. The shungite you typically find in stores or online is 50-70% carbon, and it does not contain fullerenes. These stones are usually a dull, matte black.
When it comes to shungite, the fullerenes are the most important part. If at all possible, you want elite shungite. Type II shungite may make for an attractive bracelet, but it will be doing little to protect you from EMF radiation. Elite shungite can be much harder to find, and it’s not always labeled as “elite” — you may need to look for the carbon content. Aim for a carbon content higher than 90%, and if the carbon content isn’t listed, assume that it’s not elite.
Shungite products
There is no shortage of shungite products available on the market today. Many of them contain Type II Shungite, which lacks the fullerenes you need for EMF protection. In order to receive any benefits from a shungite stone, it must be elite shungite. While it’s rarer and more expensive, elite shungite is a remarkable stone that is well worth the investment.
The reality, however, is that researching what products contain elite shungite can take a great deal of time and effort. If you’re interested in purchasing a shungite product, you’ll want to keep reading — we’re going to cover some of the more popular products currently out there to help you decide if they’re right for you.
Heka Naturals Shungite Pyramid
If you’re looking to use shungite to protect a room, a pyramid might seem like an attractive option. It looks like an ordinary knick-knack, but it serves an actual purpose. Or at least, it should serve a purpose. That’s really the question. Does a shungite pyramid protect you against EMF radiation?
Heka Naturals Shungite Pyramid is just one of the many shungite pyramids on the market, but it’s one of the more highly reviewed options. The following paragraph, however, could apply to any other shungite pyramid out there. You can’t shape elite shungite. Any product that has been molded into a clean pyramid shape must have been made from type II shungite, which does not contain fullerenes and will not protect you from EMF radiation.
If you’re looking to receive some of the more mystical and less-studied benefits of shungite, it’s possible that type II and, subsequently, this pyramid, could provide that. However, if you are looking for EMF protection, this would not be a purchase worth making.
Heka Naturals Shungite Pendant
Shungite jewelry is an attractive option for a lot of people. We’re exposed to EMF radiation constantly over the course of a day, so it makes sense to want to carry some sort of protection with you. Jewelry is an easy and unobtrusive way to do that.
Enter Heka Naturals’ Shungite Pendant. This necklace from Heka Naturals is available with three different pendant styles– half moon, bell, and crystal. Each pendant is made from Karelian shungite hung on a simple black cord. You tie the necklace yourself, so the length is fully adjustable. The pendant is about two inches long and the cord measures 31.5 inches. The manufacturer does recommend washing the pendant with warm water prior to its first use. It’s important to note, as well, that these pendants are made from polished shungite.
A better, albeit less fancy-looking option, is from Wallystone Gems, who sell three different styles of an elite noble shungite pendant necklace. The necklace includes the actual, raw elite stone, and you can choose between different methods of attaching the stone to the necklace cord.
Wallystone Gems Shungite Stickers for Cell Phones
Another Wallystone Gems product, the Shungite Stickers for Cell Phones pack consists of five small stickers that attach to the back of your phone. The stickers contain shungite, and they are advertised as protecting against EMF radiation.
The problem is that nowhere in the product description does the manufacturer confirm what type of shungite these stickers are made from. And as they are made from shaped shungite, one can’t help but be skeptical. Reading through reviews, a few reviewers did mention the product passed the test with an EMF meter. So it’s possible that it could potentially be worth the price, but proceed with caution if you do decide to buy.
Wellness Hut Shungite Powder
Shungite powder, if made from elite shungite, could be used to create a highly effective EMF paint. It would block 92-98% of EMF radiation, depending on the carbon content of the shungite. However, the shungite powder you find on the market is not typically made from elite shungite.
Wellness Hut’s Shungite Powder, for example, is made from Tier III shungite. And that makes sense — they probably aren’t going to grind up elite stones for the sake of making a powder. You would need a whole lot of stones for that, and tier III is much easier to obtain. For that reason, powders like this are not really a worthwhile purchase.
Shungite Club Elite Shungite Stones
Your best bet for EMF protection is really to scatter raw stones throughout your home. Place them near electronic equipment, near smart meters, and especially in the bedroom near the bed. Keeping a stone or two with you in your pocket could offer protection as you go about your day, as well. But where can you find elite shungite?
Shungite Club’s Elite Shungite stones are one option. Available on Amazon, these stones contain 92-98% carbon. They can be used for water purification and for EMF protection. We’ve gone over using the stones for EMF protection — what about water purification?
According to Shungite Club, add 10-15 grams worth of shungite (each stone weighs between one and four grams) to one liter of water. Let the mixture sit at least two to three hours, preferably overnight. Remove the stones immediately prior to using or consuming the water.
You could also use these stones to make your own shungite jewelry. Find one that you like, and wrap it in wire or put it inside a bead cage. From there, all you need is to find a chain or piece of rope for the necklace, and you’ve got a homemade piece of elite shungite jewelry.
Final thoughts
Shungite is an intriguing stone, both because of its rarity and because of its benefits. While every shungite stone and product you see isn’t going to protect you from EMF radiation, elite shungite has even been used in industrial applications to mitigate electromagnetic radiation. If you’re trying to protect your home, shungite stones are an inexpensive supplement to the other measures you’re already taking.
