Cell phones may be the norm these days, but plenty of people still rely on landlines for a variety of reasons. Some jobs require you to use them — indeed, they remain an office staple — and some people just prefer their simplicity. You may even perceive them as safer than a cell phone, at least from an EMF standpoint.

That is not, however, always true.

Some landlines, particularly cordless ones, still produce a great deal of EMF radiation. Note, however, that we said some — not all. There are plenty of low EMF options out there if you know where to look. And, fortunately, you’re in the right place. We will also dive into some special considerations to keep in mind when purchasing your new phone.

If you’re looking for an easy, intuitive interface and no extra features to worry about learning, this phone from AT&T is perfect. The cord is 7 feet long, which is a bit on the short side but you can easily purchase a longer replacement cord, if necessary. Considerations when buying a landline phone

If you’re in the market for a new landline phone and are considering options other than the ones above, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

• Go wired. Cordless phones produce large amounts of EMF radiation as they send and receive signals from the base station. Wired phones, meanwhile, really don’t generate much EMF radiation at all. The wire may be inconvenient, but from a safety standpoint, it’s actually ideal.

• Use a headset. If you must go cordless, avoid keeping the phone in close proximity to your body. That includes when you are both on and off a call. To achieve this, you can use a wired headset. Measuring your phone’s radiation

Once you’ve settled on a meter, you can take your measurements. With a cordless phone, your primary consideration will be RF-EMF radiation, although it may produce some amount of electric and magnetic fields, depending on the model. Wired models don’t really generate much RF-EMF radiation, so in that case, you’re looking just at the electric and magnetic fields.

Put your meter next to the phone and turn it on. Note the levels, and then repeat the process while the phone is sending or receiving a call to see how those levels change. If the levels are high next to the receiver while a call is ongoing, you may want to think twice before holding that headset against your head.
