Are you looking for different ways to reduce your EMF exposure at home? Maybe you’ve already covered most of the basics — your smart meter is shielded and you’ve switched to wired internet, for example. But what if it still doesn’t feel like you’re doing enough?

Whether you simply want to do more, or you suffer from a condition such as Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity and are trying to get your symptoms under control, it may be time to consider purchasing an EMF blocking sheet. These are versatile sheets of fabric, metal, or a combination of the two, that can be used in a variety of ways to lower your home’s EMF radiation levels.

In this guide, we will cover everything you need to know about EMF blocking sheets.

How do EMF blocking sheets work?

EMF blocking sheets, whether they are fabric or hard metal, usually use some sort of conductive material to attenuate (or reduce) EMF radiation. Usually, this conductive material is a type of metal, such as silver, nickel, or copper.

With fabric, metal fibers are woven in with cotton, polyester, or another soft material. This allows the fabric to be soft and flexible while still offering some degree of EMF protection. A hard metal sheet is a bit more straightforward — you can use any sheet of copper, aluminum, or another conductive metal as an EMF blocking sheet, really.

Highly conductive, Amradield’s fabric is ideal for constructing a Faraday cage, hanging on the wall, creating bags, sewing curtains, and more. It’s easy to work with and can be purchased in a variety of lengths, including 43-inches by 197-inches. The manufacturer even offers the option of purchasing multiple sheets as one continuous length, provided you let them know that is what you want at the point of purchase.

Mission Darkness TitanRF Faraday Fabric

1. Mission Darkness TitanRF Faraday Fabric. TitanRF Faraday Fabric by Mission Darkness is used in a variety of Mission Darkness products. Now, you can use this fabric to create your own custom items by simply purchasing a sheet of the fabric on its own. The sheets are available in sizes ranging from one yard to 50 yards, and the fabric is lab tested and proven to attenuate frequencies between 10MHz and 5GHz. It is easy to work with, highly effective, and versatile for use in a variety of different projects.

Using your EMF blocking sheet

EMF blocking sheets are useful for a variety of purposes. You can turn fabrics into curtains, bed canopies, and other items that need to be soft and flexible. Metal sheets can be easily affixed to your wall, preventing outside EMF radiation from entering inside. Fabric can be used in this same way, too.

An EMF blocking sheet is perfect for someone looking to create DIY EMF protective items. It is often more affordable to purchase blocking sheets than it is an actual, protective product, making them cost-effective for anyone on a budget.

Depending on how you plan to use your EMF blocking sheet, there are a few items that may be helpful to purchase alongside it. If you are planning on sewing sheets together to create something, your best bet is to use a conductive thread. Conductive thread is usually made from a conductive metal, such as stainless steel, sometimes woven in with regular thread. This type of thread is a little cumbersome to work with, but it will provide you with the maximum amount of EMF protection.

If you are interested in a conductive thread, there are many different options out there. One budget-friendly choice is from NGW, their 1pc Conductive Stainless Steel Sewing Thread. Each spool is 72-feet long, making it perfect for any project, large or small.

Not everyone is big on sewing, however. If you’re looking for something a little simpler, you can also connect EMF blocking sheets using a conductive tape, such as TitanRF Faraday Tape. Just make sure the tape is securely pressed down onto the sheets and that there are no gaps.

Testing your sheet

There are two ways you can test your sheets. The first is with an EMF meter. These are devices that detect surrounding EMF radiation and alert you when the levels are high. With an EMF meter, you can measure the EMF levels all-around your home both before and after your blocking sheet is installed.

If you don’t already have an EMF meter, we generally recommend the TriField TF2. This is an excellent entry-level meter, although really, any meter capable of detecting RF-EMF radiation in addition to electric and magnetic fields will do.

The process for using a meter to check your protective sheet depends to some extent on how you used the sheet. If you made them into curtains, for example, you could measure the EMF radiation levels present near your windows both with the curtains open and closed. If the sheet is effective, you should notice a decrease in EMF levels with the curtains closed.

Another way to test your EMF blocking sheet is by using your cell phone. If your sheet is a flexible fabric, wrap it completely around your cell phone while the device is powered on. It should immediately lose signal. You can test this by using a second phone to call the first — if the call goes through, that means a signal is passing through the sheet. Try wrapping the phone in multiple layers to see at what point the signal drops off. If your fabric requires multiple layers, this tells you that, in whatever application you are using it, you will need to use more than one layer.

Final thoughts

EMF blocking sheets are versatile and effective against EMF radiation. With a blocking sheet, you can line an interior or exterior wall or make other protective items that help lower your home’s EMF levels.
