As technology advances and EMF radiation becomes a more ingrained part of modern society, EMF certification training is becoming more and more popular. But what, exactly, does it entail, and what job is it preparing you for? Ultimately, what’s the benefit of obtaining your certification?

What is EMF certification training?

EMF certification training prepares students for a career as an EMF consultant. EMF consultants visit commercial and residential dwellings and help reduce the number of electromagnetic pollutants present. Ideally, this should include electric and magnetic fields, as well as radiofrequency (RF) radiation.

Some EMF consultants help advise architects and engineers during a structure’s construction, resulting in a building that is low-EMF by design. Others visit homes and businesses and advise owners on changes that could be made to lower the amount of EMF present. They often utilize various equipment to test different EMF levels, with significantly more accuracy than a standard, retail-grade EMF meter.

Who provides training

There are a few different options for certification. The important thing to keep in mind here is that a central regulating body doesn’t govern EMF certification courses. At a state university, for example, a program is accredited if it meets certain standards and encompasses enough information. An EMF certification course, on the other hand, can be offered by anyone. That’s why it’s imperative you do your research before signing up.

Let’s take a look at two of the more trusted programs out there.

EMF Experts

Program length: You can take single courses or a nine-week live certification course.
Price: Varies. Self-guided courses are between $30 and $300, while a nine-week live certification course runs $3500.

The certification course from EMF Experts consists of several live webinars. The program is structured so you can either do these at a designated time, or at your own pace, provided the program is completed within a six-month timeframe. Students learn about the history of EMF radiation, EMF meters, the electromagnetic spectrum, and other relevant topics, all in two-hour blocks.

Those interested in continuing their education beyond certification may continue to take courses, as well. EMF Experts offer re-certification, as well as dozens of self-guided “ready when you are” courses that can be done online at any time.

International Institute of Building Biologists

Program length: At least 200 hours of online work, 40 hours of mentoring, and 120 hours of in-person experiential training.
Price: Courses can be purchased a la carte or all at one time. If purchased individually, they are $115 per credit hour, or $5,355 upfront for the certification.

The International Institute of Building Biologists actually offers two relevant certifications for EMF consultants. Students can opt for the Building Biology and Environmental Consultant (BBEC) certification, which specializes in mold, pollutants, and other environmental toxins, including EMF radiation. Or, they can specialize as an Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist (EMRS), a certification that primarily involves EMR and EMF-related courses.

Courses are offered online, but each program requires 120 hours of experiential training that must be done in-person. Their facilities are located in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Job outlook

EMF consultants fill a niche role, and there is little information out there regarding this career path. That being said, as EMF radiation becomes more prevalent in our daily lives, it stands to reason that demand for this profession will grow. Preventing electromagnetic interference is important from a commercial standpoint, as is reducing employees’ exposure to electromagnetic hazards. Residential homes can benefit from an inspection, as well.

Parting thoughts

If you are interested in becoming an EMF consultant, certification is one way to increase your knowledge base while gaining credibility with your clients. Just be sure to thoroughly research and vet any program before signing up. Look for reviews from former students, and consider reaching out if you have questions.

EMF consultation as a career is likely not going anywhere, and there’s a good chance the field will continue to grow. Becoming certified could lead to a lucrative and rewarding career helping others reduce their EMF exposure. All About EMF Certification Training
